With only a couple of weeks left until the release of Shattered Space, the folks over at Bethesda released a deep dive into what Starfield players can expect from the new DLC. And the language used to describe House Va’Ruun’s new planet sounds like the medicine the game needs.

“We’re expanding Starfield‘s galaxy with a brand new, completely handcrafted world and deep new storyline,” said Tim Lamb, lead creative producer on Starfield, to open today’s video—and that word choice seems very intentional. Given so many of the criticisms leveled at the game involve drab, procedurally generated worlds and landscapes that quickly turn it from a space exploration odyssey into a fast travel simulator, a word like “handcrafted” naturally pricks my ears. I found Starfield more and more disappointing the longer I played, but that doesn’t mean it’s beyond repair.

At this year’s Gamescom, Bethesda finally revealed the release date for the much-awaited Starfield DLC, Shattered Space. The company also decided to throw in a little bit extra, with graphics upgrades and a cool new vehicle also on the way.

The first major story expansion for Starfield, Shattered Space, is coming out on Sept. 30. With the original game being completely free on Xbox Game Pass, fans might have hoped Shattered Space will be free to play too, but Bethesda has other ideas.

As dividing as Starfield was upon release, it ended up being another commercial hit for Bethesda. Just over a year after its Sept. 6, 2023 release, the space adventure will receive a new chapter in the form of the Shattered Space DLC.

Starfield‘s journey across the stars can sometimes feel nice, but quickly starts to drop off once planets begin feeling the same as ones you’ve already visited. A new mod, the first by modder VolaticWolf, aims to change that and give “each and every planet” an overhaul.

The overhaul primarily targets biomes, which VolaticWolf says will “make [the planets] unique,” offering players much more incentive to go and pay them a visit. PC players won’t be the only ones with access to the mod, either. Xbox owners of the game will also get a chance to give the mod a crack and diversify their interplanetary experience. Starfield‘s planets, especially those that aren’t part of any broader quest or story, are usually quite stale with few interesting landmarks to visit, making many of them feel more like placeholders than anything else.

The long-awaited release date for Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC has finally been confirmed, but fans are being treated to a huge update tonight, too.

Starfield’s DLC was long touted for a fall 2024 release, but with every month that passed, fans got increasingly eager to hear more. During Gamescom’s Opening Night Live on Aug. 20, their wishes came true.

Starfield’s first planned expansion, Shattered Space, is set to release this Fall. And while we have no clue what the next DLC is about, or when it’s coming, a trademark suggests it’s called Starborn.

First shared by Reddit user Quelanight2324 in a July 29 thread, ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda Softworks, filed a trademark for Starborn, which players speculate is the title of the next Starfield DLC set to release sometime after Shattered Space.

Your adventure throughout the cosmos in Starfield has arrived in 2023, but the base game is not the end of the journey for Bethesda’s new IP just yet—with the game’s first expansion, Shattered Space, on the way.

An expansion for Starfield isn’t surprising given Bethesda’s dedication to releasing DLCs for its previous games. The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim and Fallout 4 received numerous DLCs years after their releases, and the case was similar for Fallout 76, which launched in 2018.

Bethesda keeps adding content to Starfield, and its latest release is a $7 “Bounty Hunter” questline. When you pay money for new content in video games, you expect it to be worthwhile, but that’s clearly not the case in this case.

In a review of the quest, Kotaku said it took them just 20 minutes to complete. It’s also apparently only available to purchase via in-game currency, meaning you must spend $10 before buying the Bounty Hunter content.

The launch of the Starfield Creation Club where players can purchase both fan- and Bethesda-made content for the game has drawn a ton of backlash from players. So much backlash, in fact, that Todd Howard himself weighed in on the situation and promised a solution.

Howard spoke on the issue in a June 16 interview with gaming YouTuber MrMattyPlays and claimed pricing in the Creation Club was based on Bethesda’s previous experiences with the model in other games, including the live-service Fallout 76. Howard said Bethesda is always looking to “give value to everybody,” and that adjustments will be made in those segments where the value is off. Regarding the paid Starfield mission “The Vulture,” Bethesda’s director said it was the product of several ideas that the company wanted to “wrap around a quest,” and that it is “seeing the feedback.”

Every now and again Bethesda implements a paid model for mods in its games, and it usually goes very wrong, very fast. Now, history rhymes once again as Starfield faces thousands of negative reviews following Bethesda’s attempt at re-introducing paid mods into its flagship titles.

The paid mods were brought into the game through the release of the Creation Kit and Creations, with which Bethesda aimed to tackle third-party mod-hosting websites such as NexusMods and centralize mod sharing. Alongside that, Creations also featured a paid mod section where both the modder and the publisher would earn a commission from each purchase. This enraged the fanbase, to say the least, who felt Bethesda is trying to “exploit” mods and modders to earn an extra buck from those creators trying to fix its games.
