League of Legends is going through a momentous change to its calendar starting in 2025, with the 15-year-old MOBA now hosting three seasons through every twelve-month cycle.

These three League seasons will each have their own “distinct” themes designed to expand Runeterra’s narrative, build competitive progression, and dictate update plans from the Riot Games development team. There will also be a new League champion released each and every season that ties directly into those themes and updates, with the three seasons across any given year then closely connecting through champs and lore.

League of Legends is turning 15 in October, and Riot is making sure to give the game its biggest birthday yet. But in this celebration, players are the ones getting the gifts with an event called Player Days.

October 2024 is set to be a memorable month in LoL history—looking back with stories and returning Legacy skins, and looking forward with new skins and freebies. More reveals are to come in a Dev Livestream Q&A that kicks off the event, at 4pm CT on Oct. 9, but here is what we know so far.

In line with Riot’s policy of bringing the old and battered champs of yore up to speed, at least visually, Teemo has finally had his long-awaited visual update confirmed. The redesign, while not too substantial, is slated to be released alongside League of Legends Patch 14.20.

Riot confirmed this in a Sept. 23 dev diary and gave League fans a deep dive into the creative process behind the art and sustainability update (ASU). The little critter’s old design was pretty basic and didn’t do much to highlight Teemo’s character, despite all the effort put in by the voice actor. The updated variant is precisely aiming to correct this by giving Teemo a more lively, cheerful look that actually has animated movement and a proper recall that shows him moving about rather than just, well, standing there menacingly.

Riot Games is finally adding a new member to the massively popular League of Legends virtual K-pop group K/DA—sort of.

In a new Dev Update video shared today, Sept. 23, League fans got a sneak peek at four new Superfan skins coming next month. And while they each inevitably have their own appeal, one skin in particular is already a smash hit in the eyes of the community: K/DA Gragas.

Arena and Swarm have been massively successful endeavors in League of Legends, becoming some of the most played non-Summoner’s Rift game modes. However, as things stand, neither can become permanent additions, and Riot Games thinks that’s for the best.

Riot clarified its decision to make Arena and Swarm rotating modes and had a whole lot more to say in a Sept. 23 dev diary focusing on the future of the two modes. In it, Riot’s devs elaborated on the incredible success Arena had initially, but also how it saw significant losses in terms of player count after the first two months. “Arena performed very well for the first two months of its run, but then engagement started to dip significantly,” the devs said, adding, “We believe this is due to a lack of novelty and progression systems that would keep Arena players coming back.”

More than one League of Legends team from the LCS or LEC competitions making it into the 2024 World Championship playoffs was always going to be a surprise, but fans will be dismayed to see just how long the odds on Western teams are this year.

The numbers, crunched by a League tech whizz on their Worlds Simulator app, are rough reading for European and North American fans alike: If every Worlds team plays to their betting odds—in this case, Bet365 was used—then there’s a 65.44 percent chance a single Western team qualifies for the eight-team quarterfinals. Chances then plummet to as low as 1.21 percent regarding two teams from the competitions surviving groups.

What is Worlds Pick’Em?

Pick’Em is an activity hosted on the LoL Esport website where fans can predict outcomes for the League World Championship. This year there are three stages of Pick’Em: Crystal Ball, where you predict many things like champions picked or pentakills scored, Swiss, and Knockout stage, where you’ll try to predict which teams will survive the longest in the tournament. You can score points for accurate predictions, and, if you do well, you could win cool in-game rewards like emoticons and the almost unreachable ultimate skins.

The not-so-secret news is finally out: Linkin Park will be the featured performing artist for the 2024 League of Legends World Championship anthem.

This year’s Worlds anthem is “Heavy is the Crown,” a new song off Linkin Park’s upcoming album From Zero, which will be launching later this year on Friday, Nov. 15. It’s the second single on the album—the band’s first in seven years—and will be the band’s eighth studio album in nearly 24 years since its debut with 2000’s Hybrid Theory.
